Economist / Senior Policy Analyst at Demos

The Economist or Senior Policy Analyst will develop and execute quantitative research on a range of issues related to economic security and upward mobility, with a specific focus on racial wealth inequality. The position is housed within the research team at Demos and will report to the Director of Policy and Research.

The successful candidate will have the following skills and qualities:

• Deep Data Expertise. You are proficient in using one or more statistical software packages such as Stata, SPSS or R. You have deep familiarity working with microdata from U.S. statistical agencies and other sources of household data, including proficiency with the American Community Survey (ACS), Current Population Survey (CPS), and Survey of Consumer Finances (SCF).

• Excellent Writing and Analytical Skills. You have experience executing research and writing projects, from initial concept stage to final drafting of research reports, issue briefs, fact sheets and other materials. You are an agile and versatile writer who can write with a point of view without sacrificing intellectual rigor.

• Strategic and Creative Thinking. You understand that ideas matter and view research as a critical component for creating the public and political will for change. You are curious by nature, and eager to uncover new analyses that can advance the public debate.

• Developed Racial Equity Analysis & Practice. You have a well-developed racial equality analysis and consistently integrate this analysis into your work projects and personal interactions by addressing structural implications and disproportionate impacts of policies, activities, and decisions on race, class and other group identities within the context of your job responsibilities and projects.

• External Outreach and Collaboration. You are skilled at identifying and cultivating productive relationships with key individuals in academia, government, and policy and advocacy organizations.

Advanced degree in economics, sociology or public policy is required. Title will be determined based on educational background. Experience working in a think-tank or public policy setting is a plus. Active engagement in the media and public speaking, or willingness to increase your public engagement with support and training resources from Demos, is also a plus. Candidates need to bring a strong commitment to excellence and an ability to work in a fast-paced environment.  The position is full-time and based in New York City or Washington, DC, with a strong preference for New York City.
