Ph.D.The Ph.D. Program in Sociology develops sociologists of broad theoretical background who are trained in a mixture of research methods, from survey research to ethnographic, historical and comparative approaches. Students pursue studies in many areas of sociology, but given its location, the program is strong in urban sociology, studies of race, ethnicity, and immigration, research on urban institutions, including schools, and on neighborhoods and urban spaces.
CUNY doctoral students may enroll in the Certificate Program in Demography through their home doctoral program. Prospective doctoral students must apply for admission to one of the many doctoral degree programs in the traditional disciplines associated with demography, such as Sociology, Economics, Public Health, and Political Science. Once admitted, a student is then eligible to take demography certificate courses en route to the doctoral degree.
