Bowling Green State University Sociology Ph.D. with a Concentration in Demography

The Department of Sociology at Bowling Green State University offers advanced study at both the master’s and doctoral levels for students who seek employment in either academic or non-academic settings. The doctoral program is ranked in the top 20 nationally in productivity by the National Research Council. With 20 full-time faculty and approximately 40 funded graduate students, the program features small classes and a high level of interaction between faculty and students in a friendly, informal environment that stresses excellence in both research and teaching. Faculty are accessible to students, and students are regarded as motivated junior scholars. The program offers an abundance of formal and informal opportunities to share ideas, and faculty and students regularly collaborate on research and coauthor papers presented at professional meetings and published in scholarly journals.

The objective of the Graduate Program in Demography is to prepare students for careers in teaching, research, and/or governmental or community service focusing on demography. The program gives students insights into the complexities of population processes, including fertility, mortality/morbidity, migration, and family formation, and the relationships between such processes and broader social and economic contexts and trends. The Department of Sociology presently offers a general Ph.D. program in Sociology with a Concentration in Demography. Students in the doctoral program who do not already have an M.A. will complete one during their course of study.
